CERVICAL CANCER SCANDAL
The country has been rocked by the revelations surrounding the Cervical Cancer scandal that has
emerged in recent months.
Figures indicate that cervical check had an 80% uptake by women offered smear tests. Cervical check, was a very important state funded service providing screening to women.
What we know:
In 2011 221 women submitted themselves to smear testing and were informed that the tests showed no abnormalities. There may be more than 221 women affected.
Subsequently, in 2014, an audit was carried out and it transpired that, for those 221 women, the results of their tests were incorrect.
The women were not told.
17 of the women had died. The families of these women were not told.
29th April 2018 - The clinical director of cervical check announces that she is standing down.
11th May 2018 - The director of the HSE resigned.
11th May 2018 - Taoiseach apologises to women affected by scandal.
July 2018 - Very sick women continue to be forced to take their cases to court to obtain justice.
